The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) at the Boulder Medical Center is an outpatient surgical services department at the Broadway location. We perform patient procedures that allow for a discharge to home on the same day as the procedure. This includes procedures from most all specialty areas of medicine. We provide service for all Boulder Medical Center surgeons and gastroentestinal doctors. We also provide service for several outside doctors including plastics, hand specialty, podiatry and pain management. We offer all levels of anesthesia necessary for your procedure. We also offer IV therapy for infusion of medications and fluids.
Hours of operation
Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM performing procedures every day.
We are closed on all major holidays.
Directions
The ASU is located at the Broadway facility at the corner of Broadway & Balsam. Our parking lot can be accessed just east of Broadway on Balsam. The department is located on the second floor just to the right of the elevators. If you arrive before the Front Desk is open you should proceed down the tiled hall and continue to the elevator and stairs on the left side of the hall and on to the 2nd floor.
Fees
We contract with most major insurances and offer competitive pricing for procedures in the Boulder County and surrounding areas. If you would like to have a cost estimate of your planned procedure you can request the Ambulatory Surgery Unit cost by calling 303-440-3220 and the physician charges from your physicians office. Please keep in mind that the estimated price is our best estimate at the time of the procedure being scheduled. Events during the course of care can sometimes change the cost of the procedure.
Instructions for Ambulatory Surgery Unit procedures
There are a few instructions about our center that pertain to most of our patients and the procedures that they will have performed.
- After your procedure has been scheduled with us we will call you if we have not met with you in person to talk about your upcoming procedure and your overall health and to answer any questions that you may have.
- A pre-op nurse will discuss the events that will occur during your visit in the ASU and prepare you for what to expect during the procedure.
- If there are further lab draws or tests that need to be completed before your procedure occurs we will facilitate them being completed.
- This will be the perfect opportunity for you to have all of your questions answered and for you to tell us about yourself.

Upon arrival
After you have checked in, the ASU nursing staff will take care of you. There may be paper work to complete, a prep and shave to perform, at stop at the toilet, a gown to put on, an IV to insert, but all of this will be taken care of by the ASU nurse. Parents and designated support people are welcome to be with you during your wait in the pre-op holding area if time allows. Parents are allowed in the Operating Room until the child is asleep for children under 10 years of age if they wish to be there. Parents may join their children in the recovery room following the procedure.
During your operative procedure
Your support person/s will be kept informed as to the progress of the procedure as considered appropriate. A support person is also allowed to be with you in the recovery room when appropriate. The recovery room is where your physician and nursing staff will speak with you and your support person about the procedure and your home care and follow up appointments. Don't be surprised if you do not remember much of this part of your procedure as you will still have sedative in your system that tends to have some amnesic effects.
