MEDICAL TRAINING & SPECIALTY
After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Higgins went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Public Health and worked as assistant radiation safety officer at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, prior to beginning his medical training there. He earned his Medical Degree in 1974 and subsequently completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. This was followed by with a fellowship in Endocrinology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Higgins continued his training at the Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts as chief resident in medicine.
Dr. Higgins is trained to care for the internal medicine needs of adults. Within the field of internal medicine he has sub-specialized in endocrinology, which is the study of glandular diseases such as thyroid diseases, cholesterol problems and obesity. Endocrinology also involves working with diabetes, both monitoring for complications, as well as educating patients. With a background in Radiological Health, he served as Radiation Control Specialist for the University of North Carolina. He also practices nuclear medicine, which involves the use of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat illnesses.
During his chief medical residency he became interested in clinical nutrition. Since then he helped establish the Hyperalimentation Team at Boulder Community Hospital.
The goal of Dr, Higgins and his staff is to provide you with the needed information and knowledge which will enable you to assume responsibility for much of your own health care. It is his belief that endocrine and metabolic diseases can be controlled best and least expensively on a daily basis by the patients themselves. Because teaching is an important part of his practice a member of his staff is a trained diabetes educator.
PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS
