About Jennifer Beck

Q&A:  Get to know Dr. Jennifer Beck, orthopedic and sports medicine specialist

Where did you live while growing up?

I was born in Denver and lived my first few years in Conifer. Then, my dad’s job relocated us to the San Francisco Bay area, where I spent the remainder of my childhood. He worked in sales in Silicon Valley; my mom was a high school mathematics teacher.

At what moment did you know you wanted to practice medicine?

I took an anatomy and physiology class in 6th grade as a 6-week elective. I was hooked! And so curious. I have a few family members who are nurses, but no physicians are in my immediate family.

Growing up as a gymnast and soccer player, I had my share of injuries. I was exposed to orthopedic surgery when I had my first fracture at age 10 and again at 16 when I needed foot surgery for a tumbling injury.

I became very interested in sports medicine but was intimidated by joining the medical field. So I worked summers in physical therapy offices to gain experience. In college, I worked as an athletic trainer for UCLA football, men’s water polo, and track and field.

When a water polo player dislocated his shoulder during one practice, I was on the first responder medical staff. I brought him to the athletic training room, where an orthopedic surgeon was in the clinic. I watched the doctor quickly and easily manipulate the shoulder back into place. Several weeks later, the athlete returned after surgery to start rehabilitation. I was so curious about what had happened in the interim weeks. I learned from this experience that I wanted to be the person that fixed the injury.

What is the most inspiring part of orthopedics and sports medicine?

I love using my general orthopedic and surgery skills to help patients get back to their favorite activities and hobbies. I also enjoy talking to my patients about activities, sports, and hobbies that we commonly encounter and learning about those that I have never experienced.

It can be discouraging to have pain or an injury remove you from your passions. Helping patients recover physically and psychologically is an essential and inspiring part of my practice.

What are the best skills you bring to your practice?

They are listening to patients and being open to their ideas, goals, and unique needs. No two patients are the same, and each patient deserves a new, individualized care plan.

What is your philosophy of care?

I have several. On top of the list is treating each patient I would like my family. Specifically, I have a deep care and concern for maximizing the benefits and efficiency of treatments while minimizing the risks and complications that may come with medical care. Second, as I stated earlier, I believe in providing each patient with an individualized care plan that meets their unique goals and needs. And lastly, I strive to leave every visit with patients feeling that we have a mutually agreed-upon plan to help them recover that includes goal setting, expectation management, and a timeline for achieving our objective.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I love anything that gets me outdoors, from sports like biking, skiing, hiking, and kayaking to outdoor music or arts festivals. These adventures often take me to other cities, states, and countries. I also love cooking and baking, especially around holidays and special occasions. Have a new ethnic food to try? I’ll be right there! I love having my family and friends by my side as much as possible for these activities.
