About Kim Guthke
Kim has worked in the medical field for 20 years and in the Boulder Medical Center dermatology department for the past 15 years.
Born in Boulder, she has lived in many places including Washington, New York, Austria, England, Ecuador, Belgium and Taiwan. Kim loves Boulder and was happy to return home after traveling and working abroad.
Kim discovered her passion for medicine at the age of nine. Her mom, a nurse, let Kim read through her nursing journals and anatomy books while Kim was growing up. “Science and the human body have fascinated me since and led to my career as a Physician Assistant (P.A.),” Kim explained.
Prior to becoming a P.A., she worked as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and dialysis technician. Kim also volunteered at a therapeutic riding center for three years, where she helped kids living with autism and physical disabilities.
“The thing I love most about practicing medicine is the opportunity to talk to and teach patients about their health and medical conditions,” she said. “I feel a sense of purpose when diagnosing, advising and overseeing treatment plans for patients of all ages who present a wide range of skin conditions and issues. I truly enjoy educating patients how to care for and protect their skin.”
Prior to her career in medicine, Kim worked in international travel helping clients arrange trips around the world and setting up visas for American students who worked abroad. Before that, she taught preschool in Boulder and English as a second language for kindergarten thru twelfth grade in Taiwan.
“My great love for exploring other countries and cultures was sparked by traveling around the globe at age ten with my parents and two younger siblings,” Kim said. “This life-changing trip, as well as studying and working abroad since then has inspired me to keep traveling and exploring our incredible world with my husband and two young daughters.”
Kim and her family still enjoy many opportunities to see the world. Her husband, Rick, manages Natural Habitat Adventures, a local company that operates international eco-based wildlife tours and Kim has also traveled with medical missions to Ecuador, India and Kenya.
When not working or traveling, Kim loves to be outside camping, hiking, and trail running (her absolute favorite) in beautiful Colorado.
As an integral part of Boulder Medical Center’s dermatology team, Kim enjoys counseling patients on skin care and skin cancer prevention.
She performs skin checks; minor skin cancer removals; rash, acne and wart treatments; and anti-aging treatments such as laser and Botox.
Her philosophy of care is to examine patients thoroughly and explain as much as possible so they can stay involved in their own care.
“I often discuss the long-term health effects that excessive sun exposure can have on the skin and review the latest information about sun protection,” she said.
Kim enjoys seeing patients she has treated for the past 15 years as well as meeting new patients on a daily basis. “I enjoy hearing how people found their way to Boulder and Colorado, and really like hearing what patients do for work, travel and play in their own lives,” she said.
