Gain Hands-On Experience and Launch Your Healthcare Career in Boulder County
Boulder Medical Center partners with Front Range Community College and PIMA Medical Institute to offer clinical on-the-job externship opportunities that support your educational journey and prepare you for success in the medical field.
What Is a Medical Assistant Externship?
Often referred to as an internship, a medical assistant externship is on-the job experience that is a required part of your school’s curriculum. It provides real-world, hands-on clinical training in a healthcare setting. While the externships are unpaid, they are essential for graduation and offer valuable experience in a professional medical environment.
- Length: Approximately 180 clinic hours over 5 weeks (may vary by program)
- Location: Boulder Medical Center clinics in Boulder, Erie, Louisville, or Longmont
- Focus: Primary Care (Family Medicine or Internal Medicine) for broad clinical exposure
What You’ll Experience
Students are placed in our Family Medicine or Internal Medicine clinics to ensure a well-rounded experience that includes:
- Taking and recording vital signs
- Administering vaccines
- Patient education and communication
- Supporting administrative tasks
- Using Electronic Medical Records technology
If you have a particular interest in a specialty, we will do our best to accommodate a brief rotation in that department, pending availability and approval.
Selection Process
Our goal is to help students grow and ultimately join our team after graduation. Here’s how the externship selection process works:
- School Referral: We are contacted directly by your school if there’s a student in the Boulder area in need of placement.
- Phone Screening: We conduct an initial phone screen to learn more about you and your goals.
- Nurse Interview: If recommended, you’ll meet with our Clinical (Nursing) Team for an in-person interview.
- Externship Offer: If selected, you’ll receive an offer for an unpaid externship with us.
A Pathway to Employment
At the end of your externship, our nursing team will work closely with you to explore employment opportunities at Boulder Medical Center. Our hope is to match you with a position—either in the department where you externed or in another area of need—so you can begin your career with us.
