Food Allergies in Children: Can Oral Immunotherapy Treatment Help?
April 2, 2026 | 3 min read

Food allergies can be challenging for families, especially since even small amounts of a food can sometimes lead to significant reactions. For many families, this can feel overwhelming at times. The good news is that there are evidence-based options to help manage food allergies and reduce risk. One of these options is oral immunotherapy (OIT). In this guide, I’ll walk through what OIT treatment is and what families can expect from this approach.
In this guide, I’ll walk through what OIT treatment is and what families can expect from this approach.
What Is Oral Immunotherapy?
Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is an evidence-based treatment that helps the body get used to a food that once caused an allergic reaction. It works by consuming very small amounts of the food and gradually increasing them over time. Some patients refer to this as microdosing.
The process is performed carefully and safely in the clinic under close medical supervision.
What Is the Goal of OIT Treatment?
OIT is not a quick cure, but it can offer meaningful benefits for children and their families:
- Bite protection: Your child may be protected if they accidentally eat a small amount of the food.
- Less fear: Many families feel more confident that their child has increased tolerance when navigating meals, school, and social situations.
- Possible long-term change: When we start early enough, OIT may help the immune system change. Over time, some children can tolerate larger amounts of the food and eat more freely.
How Does the Treatment Work?
The immune system can sometimes overreact to certain foods. One type of this reaction is an IgE-mediated food allergy, which can lead to serious reactions, including anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can affect breathing and blood pressure.
With OIT, we work to help the immune system become less reactive to that food. We do this step by step:
- Start with a very small dose of the allergen
- Slowly increase the dose over time during scheduled clinic visits
- Continue daily dosing at home once a safe maintenance level is reached
This approach can help the immune system become less reactive over time.
Is Oral Immune Therapy Right for Every Child?
Not every child is a good fit for OIT. When we meet with you, we consider several factors, including:
- The type of food allergy
- Your child’s health history
- Other conditions, such as asthma
- Family goals and comfort level
We talk through these together and decide what is best for your child.
What Families Can Expect
Starting OIT is a commitment, and it’s helpful for families to understand what the process involves:
- Regular visits during the dose-escalation phase
- Daily dosing at home
- Ongoing guidance and support from the care team
The goal is to ensure families feel informed, supported, and confident throughout treatment.
