If you are thinking about long-term birth control, an intrauterine device (IUD) might be an excellent option. As a Certified Nurse Midwife at Boulder Medical Center, I often discuss IUDs with my patients looking for convenient and effective contraception.

IUDs are small, T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus by a healthcare professional. They offer highly effective, long-acting, reversible contraception, meaning you can get pregnant again quickly after removal.

Do IUDs Protect Against STIs?

It’s important to note that IUDs only protect against pregnancy. They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Using condoms is still essential for STI prevention, even if you have an IUD.

There are two main types of IUDs available in the United States:

Hormonal IUDs: Birth Control with Added Benefits

Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. These IUDs can:

    • Lighten Periods
    • Reduce Cramping
    • Sometimes, Stop Periods Altogether

Depending on the brand, hormonal IUDs last between 3 to 7 years. Common brands include Mirena, Kyleena, and Skyla.

Copper IUD (ParaGard): A Hormone-Free Birth Control Option

The copper IUD is completely hormone-free and works by preventing sperm from reaching the egg.

    • Effective for up to 10 years—making it the longest-lasting reversible contraception option.
    • This may cause heavier or more extended periods for some individuals.

Why Choose an IUD? Key Benefits

    • Highly Effective — IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control, with a failure rate of less than 1%.
    • Long-Acting and Reversible — Once inserted, an IUD provides continuous contraception for several years, and fertility returns quickly after removal.
    • Convenient — You don’t have to remember to take a pill or use another daily method.
    • Reduced Menstrual Symptoms (Hormonal IUDs) — Hormonal IUDs can lighten periods, reduce cramping, and sometimes stop periods altogether.
    • Hormone-Free Option (Copper IUD) — The copper IUD is a good option for women who prefer non-hormonal birth control.

What to Expect: IUD Insertion & Side Effects

    • Insertion — The insertion process can be slightly uncomfortable for some women but is generally quick. At Boulder Medical Center, we can discuss pain management options.
    • Potential Side Effects — Some women may experience spotting or cramping in the first few months after IUD insertion. Hormonal IUDs can cause other side effects, such as mood changes or acne, although these are less common than with other hormonal birth control methods. Copper IUDs may increase menstrual bleeding or cramping.
    • STI Protection — IUDs do not protect against STIs. Condoms are still necessary for STI prevention.

Is an IUD right for you?

The best way to determine if an IUD is the proper contraception method for you is to talk to your healthcare provider. At Boulder Medical Center, I can discuss your individual needs and preferences and help you decide which type of IUD, if any, fits you best.
