Longmont Pediatricians Share Summer Safety Tips for Families

As families across Longmont head outside to meet new friends at summer camp, splash in local pools, or play in neighborhood parks, pediatricians at Boulder Medical Center want to share a few essential reminders to help keep your kids safe and healthy this summer. These simple precautions can help prevent common warm-weather injuries and make the most of everything a Longmont summer offers.

Sunscreen and Sun Protection for Babies and Kids

One of the most common questions pediatricians receive is about sunscreen—when to use it and how to apply it effectively. For infants under 6 months, I recommend avoiding sunscreen and instead keeping your baby in the shade and dressing them in lightweight, sun-protective clothing. Once your child is 6 months old, you can start applying sunscreen.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously to exposed skin about 15–30 minutes before heading to places like Dickens Farm Nature Area, Stephen Day Neighborhood Park, or a backyard gathering. Reapply every two hours—more often if your child is swimming or sweating. After you apply sunscreen, give it at least 15 minutes to absorb before your child hops back in the water.

What to Do If Your Child Gets Sunburned

Sunburns are common among children, especially in Colorado’s high-altitude sun. More than half of kids experience sunburns before age 11. Even mild sunburns can lead to skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.

Cool the affected area with a damp cloth or lukewarm bath if a sunburn occurs. Use aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe the skin and keep your child hydrated. Watch for signs of severe sunburn, such as blistering, fever, or pain—these symptoms may require medical attention.

Water Safety at Longmont Pools and Reservoirs

Longmont has many great places for kids to swim and play, including Union Reservoir and Sunset Pool. However, supervision is key no matter where your family enjoys the water.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. It can happen quickly and quietly, even in shallow water. Assign a responsible adult to watch when children are in or near water. For kids still learning to swim, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets are a must; floaties and pool toys are not substitutes for safety gear.

Swim lessons can help build strong water safety habits from a young age. Many families use local programs at the Longmont Recreation Center and Longmont YMCA. Also, remind kids to walk (not run!) around pools to prevent slips and falls.

Keep Kids Hydrated During Outdoor Play

Whether your child is running around at Kanemoto Park, biking along the St. Vrain Greenway, or spending the afternoon at Sunset Pool, staying hydrated is essential. Kids are more prone to dehydration, especially in Colorado’s dry summer heat.

Pack a reusable water bottle and encourage your child to drink often, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Water is the best choice—avoid sugary drinks, which can worsen dehydration. During long periods of outdoor activity, an occasional electrolyte drink may help replenish fluids. Watch for signs like dry lips, tiredness, or fewer trips to the bathroom, which may signal mild dehydration.

Helping Longmont Families Enjoy a Safe and Healthy Summer

Summer in Longmont offers countless opportunities for fun, from lakeside afternoons to evening walks in neighborhood parks. Simple steps—like sunscreen, supervising water play, and encouraging regular hydration—can make all the difference in keeping your kids safe.
