Endocrinology is the study of glands which secrete hormones into the body, as opposed to outside of the body, as do the sweat glands. Hormones are substances which circulate freely within the body and affect cells at a distance from where they were secreted. Because hormones are free to circulate within the body and affect every cell in the body, endocrinology is central to all metabolic processes. In fact, the board certification for endocrinology is listed as “Endocrinology & Metabolism”. All processes occurring within the body from conception to death can be and are affected by hormones. Since diabetes is a result of deficiency of or resistance to the hormone insulin, diabetes falls under the broad category of endocrinology.
Finally, since endocrinology is involved in every process within the body, it has often assumed the responsibility for entire new areas of medical study which do not clearly fit into other sub-specialties. The clearest recent example of this is the study of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. Many areas of future study are on the horizon for endocrinology such as effective treatments for obesity and the study of aging.
