Each year from August 25–31, families and health organizations across the country recognize Black Breastfeeding Week. Since its creation in 2014, this observance has celebrated the strength of Black families, uplifted breastfeeding journeys, and highlighted the importance of community in supporting maternal and infant health.
Why Black Breastfeeding Week Matters
According to the National Institutes of Health, breastfeeding is protective of maternal and infant health across the life course. Increasing breastfeeding rates in Black communities is an important public health strategy to address maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Yet, as NIH notes, disparities and inequities persist, often linked to systemic barriers and inequitable access to resources.
This acknowledgment underscores why Black Breastfeeding Week is so vital. While progress has been made, ongoing disparities remind us that community support, access to care, and relevant resources remain essential.
Grounded in Community Support
The 2025 theme for Black Breastfeeding Week, “Grounded in Community Support,” highlights the idea that breastfeeding success is not achieved alone—it takes a supportive network. Community encouragement can make a lasting difference through:
-
- Healthcare providers who offer culturally aware lactation support.
- Peer groups and family networks that share experiences and encouragement.
- Workplaces and policy initiatives that protect parental leave and provide lactation accommodations.
- When families feel supported, they are more likely to meet their breastfeeding goals—leading to healthier outcomes for both parents and babies.
