+ DOT Examinations

The physicians at the Boulder Medical Center provide DOT examinations. The following problems are considered to disqualify persons from obtaining a commercial driver’s license:

  • Loss or impairment of an extremity unless a waiver is granted
  • Diabetes requiring insulin
  • Coronary artery disease or other heart disease known to be associated with fainting, shortness of breath, collapse or congestive heart failure
  • Severe respiratory disease likely to interfere with ability to drive
  • Significant hypertension: generally further evaluation is required if BP is consistently greater than 160/90
  • Medical illness which in the judgment of the examiner could interfere with the ability to drive
  • Neurologic or seizure disorder likely to cause a loss of consciousness or impairment of ability to drive
  • Psychiatric disorder likely to cause impairment of the ability to drive
  • Visual acuity of less than 20/40 with or without correction, restricted visual fields or color vision unable to detect red, green & amber
  • Inadequate hearing
  • Alcoholism or the use of habit-forming drugs

The medical certificate is valid for 2 years & must be carried while driving.
