If you’ve heard the term midwife but aren’t quite sure what it means—or assumed it only applies to pregnancy—you’re not alone. At Boulder Medical Center, we want to clear up the confusion and introduce you to the role of Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) in modern women’s health care.
What Is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)?
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with specialized training in women’s health. Unlike doulas, who offer emotional and physical support during childbirth, CNMs are licensed medical professionals who can diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, order tests, and manage ongoing health care.
CNMs provide more than just pregnancy care—they support women through every stage of life.
What Services Do CNMs Provide?
Comprehensive women’s health care
-
- Annual gynecological exams and screenings
- Contraception counseling
- Breast exams
- Birth control
- Pap smears
- Pelvic and breast exams
- STI testing and treatment
- Perimenopause and menopause support
Prenatal, labor, and postpartum care
While CNMs are known for their expertise in childbirth, they also provide complete care throughout the entire pregnancy journey, attending births in hospital settings and working collaboratively with OB-GYN physicians when necessary.
Preventative care and education
CNMs empower women to take control of their health through education and counseling about wellness and healthy lifestyle choices, disease prevention, and self-care.
Personalized and collaborative care
CNMs prioritize building relationships with their patients, taking the time to understand individual needs and preferences. They also collaborate with OB-GYNs and other specialists when needed for comprehensive care.
Why Choose a Certified Nurse Midwife?
Women who choose midwifery care often appreciate the personalized, relationship-based approach. CNMs are known for spending more time with patients, focusing on listening, education, and empowerment.
